Marking World Environment Day on Friday, district authorities in Balurghat inaugurated a yearlong tree-planting campaign under the initiative “One Tree in Mother’s Name” at PM Shri Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, bringing together students, educators and public officials in a call for environmental stewardship.

The event, held at 10 a.m. on the school campus, was attended by South Dinajpur District Magistrate Bala Subramanian T. and Balurghat MLA Bidyut Kumar Roy, along with other district dignitaries.

Organized by the Environment Department of the Government of West Bengal, the program formally launched what officials described as a district wise afforestation effort to continue throughout the year.

Guests joined students in planting saplings across the school grounds, symbolizing both ecological responsibility and personal remembrance through the campaign’s central theme — dedicating a tree to one’s mother.

“Protecting the environment requires collective participation,” said Sandip Dutta, principal of the school. “Encouraging students to develop the habit of planting trees from an early age can play an important role in conservation. By planting a tree in the name of our mothers, we also honor nature, our greater nurturer.”

Students, teachers and administrative officials participated in the program, while cultural performances by pupils underscored messages of environmental awareness and sustainability.
