A torrential spell of rain on Friday afternoon left large parts of Patiram submerged, disrupting daily life and raising serious concerns about agricultural losses across the region. The heavy downpour, which lasted nearly three hours, inundated key areas including Patiram market , Aurobindo Pally, Nichabandar, Shivaji Sangha Para, Lakshmipur and Kadamtali. Waterlogging was particularly severe along the state highway near Bidyeshwari Temple, at the turn before Patiram College, and on the Kadamtali paved road, where traffic came to a near standstill.
Residents reported widespread hardship as streets disappeared under water and several homes were flooded. “Even a short spell of rain leads to water accumulation here. This time, the situation became unbearable,” said a local resident, pointing to the long-neglected drainage system.
According to weather officials, intermittent light to moderate rainfall is expected to continue through May 5, heightening concerns about further flooding. The unseasonal rain has also triggered anxiety among farmers in South Dinajpur district. Standing boro paddy fields have been submerged, potentially affecting yields. Vegetable cultivation, particularly chili crops, faces significant risk as excess water can damage or destroy plants.
Farmers have urged authorities to take immediate steps to drain excess water and prevent further losses. Many residents echoed the demand for urgent repairs and maintenance of drainage infrastructure, warning that without long-term solutions, such flooding could worsen with the approaching monsoon.Meanwhile, reports from the Pransagar area indicate extensive damage caused by a severe storm accompanied by hail, compounding the region’s weather-related challenges.
