Education, teachers at a private school here believe, is not confined to textbooks. It also lies in nurturing empathy, responsibility and a sense of service toward society. That belief found expression this week as students of Green View English Academy, a private school in Balurghat, donated 10,000 rupees to Shubhayan Home (Boys), a residential care institution, after raising the funds through the sale of handmade crafts created by the students themselves.
The initiative formed part of the school’s 22nd Foundation Day celebrations and a broader experiential learning program aimed at encouraging practical skills alongside social awareness. Over the past several months, students designed and produced an array of handcrafted items, including paper flowers, greeting cards, clay ornaments, jute bags and decorative household pieces. The goods were later displayed and sold on the school premises, with the proceeds earmarked for charitable work. On the day of the donation, teachers and students gathered at the Shubhayan Home campus to formally hand over the funds to the institution’s officials during a ceremony marked by warmth and emotion.
School representatives said the effort was intended to teach students that education extends beyond academic achievement.“Our goal is to foster social responsibility and humane values among students beyond the pages of textbooks,” said Debosmita De, an assistant teacher at the school. “The children are immensely happy to see that the money earned through their own hard work will support those in need. Initiatives like this also help build their confidence.”
Officials at Shubhayan Home welcomed the contribution, expressing appreciation for what they described as a thoughtful and meaningful gesture by the students.Students involved in the initiative said they hoped to continue participating in similar community service efforts in the future. The academy’s effort has already drawn praise from local residents and community leaders, who described it as an example of how schools can help shape not only minds, but also civic conscience.
