In a display of political strength and spectacle, Gautam Das, the Trinamool Congress candidate from Gangarampur Assembly constituency, filed his nomination in Balurghat on Saturday after a brief delay, leading a large and celebratory procession that drew widespread public attention.
Mr.Goutam Das arrived in Balurghat from Gangarampur, covering nearly 35 kilometers with a convoy of over a hundred vehicles. The procession, marked by traditional dhamsa and madal drums, tribal dances, and a band party, transformed the nomination filing into what resembled a festive rally. A large number of party workers and supporters joined along the route, with many residents gathering to watch. The nomination was submitted at the district administrative building in South Dinajpur amid heavy crowds and enthusiasm. While five other Trinamool candidates in the district had filed their nominations on April 2, Mr.Goutam Das was unable to do so on that date.
Explaining the delay, he said he had been holding three government positions and needed to formally resign from them before filing his nomination. The process, he added, took longer than expected as he awaited official confirmation of his resignations.“All procedures have now been completed, and I have filed my nomination accordingly,” Mr. Das said.
Responding to questions about the scale of the procession, he described it as only a preview of public support. “This is just a trailer,” he remarked, adding that the final verdict would come from voters. He expressed confidence that the Trinamool Congress would secure all six assembly seats in the district, arguing that voters have realized that supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party offers little benefit. He also noted the difficulty in estimating the size of the procession, saying that even as the front reached Balurghat, its tail stretched far behind, with many participants joining spontaneously along the way.
