In a quiet village in West Bengal’s Dakshin Dinajpur district, a teenager’s academic achievement has drawn local pride and national attention. Abhra Basak, a Class 10 student of PM Shri Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, has been selected for the Indian Space Research Organisation’s prestigious Young Scientist Programme, known as YUVIKA.
Organized by the Indian Space Research Organisation, the YUVIKA (Yuva Vigyani Karyakram) initiative aims to introduce school students to the fundamentals of space science, technology and their applications. Abhra secured an all-India rank of 176 among 456 selected students, earning him a place in the program scheduled to be held from May 11 to May 22 at the National Remote Sensing Centre in Hyderabad.
Hailing from Bhattara village in Balurghat Block, Abhra is the son of Ashish Basak, a farmer. His selection has been met with enthusiasm from his family, school and the surrounding community.School authorities described him as a bright and curious student, noting that his achievement brings recognition not only to the institution but also to the district.
For Abhra, the opportunity represents more than an academic milestone. He said he has been interested in space science since childhood and looks forward to learning directly from ISRO scientists. He also expressed a desire to pursue research in remote sensing in the future.The YUVIKA program is part of ISRO’s broader effort to encourage young students to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, nurturing the next generation of researchers and innovators in India’s growing space sector.
