A political flashpoint erupted on Thursday afternoon in the Kumarganj Assembly constituency, where a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate alleged that he was assaulted by rival party workers near a polling booth, prompting swift intervention from election authorities.

The candidate, Subhendu Sarkar, claimed that supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) were attempting to influence voters at Booth No. 24 in the Banihari area under Chalun Gram Panchayat. Acting on reports of the alleged activity, Mr.Subhendu Sarkar said he went to the location, where he was surrounded and physically attacked before being forced to leave.

Visuals from the scene, which circulated locally, appear to show a group confrontation involving the candidate. Following the incident, the Chief Electoral Officer’s office directed the police to identify and arrest individuals seen in those images.Police have since filed a report with the Election Commission, initiating a formal inquiry into the episode. The situation underscores ongoing tensions between rival political parties in the region, particularly during the sensitive electoral period.

Mr.Subhendu  Sarkar also indicated that he intends to lodge a separate complaint with the Election Commission against the district’s Superintendent of Police, alleging failure to ensure adequate security and impartial enforcement at the polling site.Officials from the Trinamool Congress have not yet issued a detailed response to the allegations. Meanwhile, election authorities are expected to review the incident as part of broader efforts to maintain order and fairness in the voting process.
