Hundreds of teachers staged a protest outside the office of the District Primary School Council (DPSC) in Balurghat on Monday, accusing authorities of issuing transfer orders in violation of established procedures.

The demonstration, organized by a joint platform of left-leaning teachers’ associations, began shortly after school hours. Protesters gathered in front of the South Dinajpur DPSC office, alleging that several teachers had been transferred without consultation with relevant teacher organizations and without following prescribed administrative norms.

According to the protesting teachers, the transfer list was released on the evening of March 13 by the current chairman of the council. Shankar Ghosh, a leader of one of the teachers’ organizations, said the orders were issued “suddenly and without adherence to proper rules or guidelines.”Shankar Ghosh further alleged that the transfers ignored the crucial student-teacher ratio in schools, which could disrupt the functioning of several institutions in the district. “Such decisions, taken arbitrarily, may affect both teachers and the learning environment of schools,” he said.

Teacher leaders also expressed concern that the timing of the transfers could create administrative complications for the affected teachers, particularly with state assembly elections recently announced. They warned that the changes might complicate future matters such as promotions or retirement-related procedures.During the protest, demonstrators briefly blocked a national highway near the DPSC office, causing temporary disruption to traffic in the area. The blockade was later lifted. The protesting teachers subsequently marched to the office of the district magistrate in Balurghat, where they submitted a memorandum demanding the immediate withdrawal of the transfer orders.
