Mr. Roy, known locally as both a legal professional and social worker, said his decision to join the party was motivated by a desire to oppose what he described as corruption and misgovernance in the state.“I have joined the BJP to stand against the corrupt administration and to work toward better governance for the people,” Mr. Roy said after the event. He added that he believes political change is necessary for the development of West Bengal.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Sarkar said Mr. Roy’s induction would strengthen the party in the district. He added that Mr. Roy had been inspired by the development agenda of India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, and had chosen to align himself with the party’s vision. With the Election Commission widely expected to announce the schedule for the West Bengal Assembly elections soon, political developments such as new party inductions are beginning to shape the early contours of the campaign across the state.
