Pre-Election Shooting of Party Worker Exposes Rising Tensions in Gangarampur

Just days before a crucial election, political tensions in this small town escalated sharply after a ruling party worker was shot near a police station late Tuesday night, triggering alarm and fresh accusations of internal strife.

The injured man, identified as Shiba Chowdhury, 34, a worker affiliated with the Trinamool Congress, is currently in critical condition at Gangarampur Super Speciality Hospital, where he remains in intensive care with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

According to family members, Mr.Shiba Chowdhury was driving home through the town when unidentified assailants opened fire near the Gangarampur police station. The bullet shattered his car window before striking him, leaving him severely injured. Local residents rushed him to the hospital.Relatives have alleged that the attack was carried out by Babu Chowdhury, a local leader associated with the TMC party’s SC/OBC wing, along with his associates. The accusation has pointed to possible factional infighting within the ruling party.

Police sources confirmed that three individuals have been detained for questioning, while efforts are underway to locate the primary suspect. Investigators are examining whether the attack stemmed from political rivalry, internal disputes, or personal enmity.The incident quickly drew political attention. Gautam Das, the Trinamool Congress candidate for the Gangarampur Assembly  seat, visited the hospital late Tuesday night along with party supporters.

Meanwhile, Satyendranath Roy, a candidate from the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleged that such violence reflects a deliberate attempt to destabilize the area ahead of the polls.The shooting has intensified concerns about law and order in the region, as residents and observers alike watch closely to see whether the violence signals deeper fractures within local political networks or a broader pattern of pre-election unrest.
