Amid the intensifying momentum of the upcoming assembly elections, a moment of compassion briefly cut through the charged political atmosphere in West Bengal’s Dakshin Dinajpur district.

Shubhendu Sarkar, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate contesting from the 38.Kumarganj Assembly constituency, halted his campaign on Tuesday to assist an injured child in urgent need of medical attention.

Mr.Subhendu  Sarkar had been engaged in a series of grassroots meetings across rural areas, interacting closely with voters as part of his election outreach. While traveling between campaign stops near Chousa village under the Dior gram panchayat, he noticed a child in visible distress, suffering from what appeared to be a fractured arm.

Recognizing the severity of the situation, Mr.Subhendu Sarkar immediately stopped his convoy. Without delay, he arranged for the child to be transported in one of his vehicles to a nearby hospital, ensuring prompt medical care.

The swift intervention drew praise from local residents, many of whom described the act as a rare and humane gesture during a period otherwise dominated by political rivalry and rhetoric. In a season defined by electoral urgency, the incident served as a reminder that moments of empathy can still find space in public life.

“In that moment, the urgency of politics faded before the unmistakable cry of a child in pain,” said Shubhendu Sarkar. “Campaigns can wait, but suffering cannot. When a child is hurt, time is not measured in votes or schedules, but in heartbeats and hope. By choosing compassion over convenience, we are reminded that humanity is not an interruption to public life—it is its very purpose.”
