With Dol festival set to dawn tomorrow, towns across Dakshin Dinajpur have already been swept up in a wave of color, music and celebration.Schools and colleges began hosting Basanta Utsav programs two days ago, where students marked the arrival of spring with songs, dance performances and the playful exchange of abir, the traditional colored powder. Campuses echoed with festivity as young people embraced the seasonal celebration in vibrant hues.

In the lead-up to Dol and Holi, markets across the district are witnessing surging crowds. Since Monday morning, traders in different parts of Gangarampur — including Chowpathi, New Market, Borobazar and Kalitala — have lined the streets with an array of brightly colored powders.

Shades of red, green, blue and yellow dominate the stalls, alongside water-based colors and herbal varieties that have grown increasingly popular in recent years. Beyond colors, shops are stocked with water guns in various shapes and sizes, as well as animal masks and festive accessories for children.

By late afternoon, business gathered momentum, with 4 p.m. marking a noticeable rise in foot traffic. The enthusiasm of children, many accompanied by their families, has lent a distinct liveliness to the marketplaces.

Vendors expressed optimism that sales would climb further on the eve of Dol and on the day of the festival itself. As anticipation builds, the towns of south Dinajpur stand immersed in a spirited and colorful prelude to one of spring’s most cherished celebrations.
