Arrest in Gangarampur Shooting Highlights Swift Police Action Amid Political Tensions

Police in West Bengal’s Dakshin Dinajpur district have arrested the main accused , Babu Chowdhury, in connection with a recent shooting incident that had heightened local tensions and drawn public attention.

The arrest was confirmed on Saturday during a press conference held in Gangarampur by Superintendent of Police Chinmoy Mittal. Senior officials, including Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural), Sub-Divisional Police Officer, and Inspector-in-Charge were also present.

The incident occurred on the night of March 24 near the Gangarampur police station area, where a member of the same political group was allegedly shot. Initial allegations were directed against Trinamool Congress leader Babu Chowdhury and his associates.

While police had earlier detained several suspects as part of the investigation, the primary accused had remained at large. Acting on a tip-off, officers conducted a late-night operation on Friday, leading to Chowdhury’s arrest. Authorities also recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.In total, six individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the case.

Addressing reporters, Superintendent Mittal outlined the sequence of the investigation and emphasized the police administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order. He indicated that further investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances  surrounding the incident.The episode has underscored concerns about localized political violence, even as law enforcement officials moved quickly to apprehend those allegedly involved.
