A shooting that left a ruling party worker critically injured in Gangarampur has taken a decisive turn with the arrest of the main suspect, intensifying political tensions in the days leading up to a crucial election.
The victim, Shiba Chowdhury, 34, a worker affiliated with the Trinamool Congress, remains in critical condition at Gangarampur Super Speciality Hospital, where he is being treated for a gunshot wound to the abdomen.According to family members, Mr.Shiba Chowdhury was driving home on the night of March 24 when assailants opened fire near the Gangarampur police station. A bullet shattered his car window before striking him. Local residents rushed him to the hospital, where he has since been under intensive care.
Relatives accused Babu Chowdhury, a local leader associated with the Trinamool Congress’s SC/OBC wing, of carrying out the attack along with several associates, raising concerns of factional infighting within the ruling party.Police officials said that, in the days following the incident, several of Mr.Babu Chowdhury’s alleged associates were detained for questioning. On Friday night, officers arrested the primary accused, Babu Chowdhury, from Malda. He was produced before the Gangarampur Sub-Divisional Court on Saturday, and an investigation into the case is underway.
It is learnt from sources that Investigators are examining multiple angles, including political rivalry, internal party disputes and personal enmity .The incident quickly drew political attention. Gautam Das, the Trinamool Congress candidate for the Gangarampur Assembly seat, visited the injured worker at the hospital shortly after the shooting. Meanwhile, Satyendranath Roy, a candidate from the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleged that the violence reflected an attempt to destabilize the region ahead of the polls.
The episode has heightened concerns over law and order in the area, with residents and political observers closely watching whether the violence signals deeper fractures within local political networks or part of a broader pattern of unrest before the election.
