At a packed rally in Balurghat Town Club ground on March 31, Abhishek Banerjee, general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, launched a sharp critique of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of withholding central funds and undermining democratic processes in West Bengal.

Addressing a large crowd gathered in support of party candidates, including former MP Arpita Ghosh, Abhisek Banerjee alleged that the BJP-led central government had stalled payments for key welfare schemes such as rural employment, housing, and drinking water projects. He further claimed attempts were being made to manipulate voter rolls by bringing in individuals from other states.

Framing the assembly election as a contest between regional autonomy and centralized control,Abhisek  Banerjee argued that the BJP’s “double-engine government” narrative had failed to deliver tangible development in Balurghat despite representation at the national level. He contrasted this with the state government’s welfare initiatives, highlighting schemes providing financial assistance to women, farmers, youth, and marginalized communities.

Abhisek Banerjee also invoked rising inflation, pointing to increases in the prices of cooking gas, tea, and milk, while criticizing the imposition of taxes on essential goods. He challenged BJP leaders to present a comparable “report card” of development.

Reinforcing campaign promises made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he outlined commitments including expanded financial support for women, universal access to drinking water, housing for all eligible families, and improved healthcare outreach.

Casting the election as both a referendum on governance and a protest against perceived economic and political marginalization, he urged voters to decisively back the Trinamool Congress, positioning the party as a defender of Bengal’s interests against external influence.
