The discovery of the partially decomposed body of a 63-year-old man in a quiet village of Kumarganj has cast a somber light on isolation and neglect in rural communities.
It is learnt that the deceased, identified as Biswanath Das, was found inside his residence in the Beltara area on Friday evening after neighbors, alarmed by a strong foul odor emanating from the house, decided to investigate. Upon entering, they discovered the body and promptly alerted the police.
According to local residents, Mr. Das had been living alone for some time following the deaths of his wife and elder son. His younger son, a migrant worker employed outside the state, was not present. Neighbors also reported that the elderly man had been struggling with prolonged mental distress in recent years.
Police from Kumarganj Police Station arrived at the scene and recovered the body, which was later sent to Balurghat District Hospital for post-mortem examination. Officials have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.Preliminary assessments suggest the case to be one of unnatural death, though authorities indicated that further details would emerge following the autopsy report.
