Dozens of teachers and activists gathered outside the district administration headquarters in Balurghat on Thursday, protesting months of unpaid wages for instructors teaching the Rajbanshi language in government-supported schools across Dakshin Dinajpur.

The demonstration, organized by the Greater Cooch Behar People’s Association, followed a march through the town before protesters assembled in front of the District Magistrate’s office, where they staged a sit-in demanding the immediate release of their pending salaries.According to the protesters, 43 teachers had been appointed to teach Rajbanshi in 16 schools across the district. While wages had been irregular for some time, they said, teachers had not received any payment for the past five months.

The situation has placed many educators and their families under financial strain, demonstrators said. Teachers involved in the program have continued their work despite the prolonged delay in salaries, hoping the payments would eventually be cleared.Education advocates also pointed to broader issues surrounding the program. Of the 16 schools designated for Rajbanshi language instruction in Dakshin Dinajpur, four currently have no teachers assigned to the subject, they said, citing delays and complications in the recruitment process.

Protesters marched through Balurghat before gathering outside the district administrative office, where they held a demonstration and sit-in to press their demands. A large police presence was deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incidents.Biswajit Barman, the Dakshin Dinajpur district secretary of the Greater Cooch Behar People’s Association, said the teachers were seeking immediate intervention from the administration to ensure that their dues are cleared and that the language program receives proper support.
