Members of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, the student wing of West Bengal’s ruling party, staged a picketing demonstration on Thursday at the Balurghat bus stand to press a series of demands, local organizers said.
The protest was led by Suraj Saha and Saurav Sarkar, joint conveners of the town unit of the organization. Supporters gathered at the bus terminus in the morning, raising slogans and holding their position for several hours.
Despite the show of strength, the demonstration had little visible effect on daily life in the town. Vehicular movement through the bus stand continued normally, and buses operated by the North Bengal State Transport Corporation ran on schedule.
Local authorities reported that the situation remained peaceful throughout the day, and there were no accounts of inconvenience to passengers. The organizers said the program was intended to highlight their concerns, though they did not immediately announce further action.
