Shivratri 2026 Draws Devotees to Balurghat’s Centuries-Old Bura Kali Mata Temple

Preparations are in full swing at the historic Bura Kali Mata Temple in Balurghat, South Dinajpur district, as the town readies itself for the observance of Shivratri on February 15. Temple authorities expect a large influx of devotees, underscoring the festival’s enduring spiritual and cultural significance in the region.



Believed to be more than a century old, the Bura Kali Mata Temple is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of the area’s shared heritage. For Shivratri, the temple premises and surrounding areas will be adorned with elaborate lighting and floral decorations, transforming the site into a focal point of devotion and celebration.


According to the temple committee, special arrangements have been made for the rituals. EqDevotees will be able to offer water and milk to the Shiva lingam throughout the day. In the evening, the temple will host the main maha aarti, chandi path, and discussions on the life and legends of Lord Shiva. A large-scale annabhog (community meal) is also planned, with prasad to be distributed to devotees.



Visitors are expected not only from Balurghat but also from neighboring districts such as Malda and North Dinajpur. On Shivratri night, many devotees traditionally remain in the temple premises , absorbed in prayers and fasting.



Local belief holds that the site embodies the combined divine energy of Lord Shiva and Goddess Kali, lending the observance a deeper spiritual resonance for worshippers. To manage the anticipated crowds, the temple committee is working closely with local authorities to ensure security and basic amenities.



Beyond its religious rituals, Shivratri at Bura Kali Mata Temple takes on the character of a community gathering. Stalls selling handicrafts, sweets, and local cuisine are expected to line the area, drawing devotees and visitors alike.As the auspicious day approaches, the festival once again highlights how faith, tradition,and community life intersect in this part of rural Bengal.
