A statewide initiative to expand educational access and reduce dropout rates took a visible step forward on Wednesday as the “Sabuj Sathi–2026” program was formally inaugurated across West Bengal, distributing free bicycles to students enrolled in Class IX.
At the district administrative building in Dakshin Dinajpur, students of Nalanda Vidyapith received their bicycles from District Magistrate Balsubrahmanyam T, marking the local commencement of the program. The initiative is designed to ease transportation challenges for students, particularly those traveling long distances to attend school.
The ceremony drew several senior district officials, including Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr.Sudip Das, Additional District Magistrate (Development) Shubhajit Mondal, and Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Chintamani Biha,DPSC Chairman - Santosh Hansda.
Officials described the bicycle distribution scheme as a continuing investment in educational equity, aimed at encouraging regular attendance and empowering students—especially those from rural and economically disadvantaged backgrounds—to pursue secondary education without the burden of unsafe or costly commutes.
Across the state, thousands of students are expected to benefit from the 2026 phase of the program, reinforcing West Bengal’s broader push to strengthen school retention and accessibility.
