After Viral Classroom Video, MLA Seeks Inquiry at Balurghat High School

A classroom incident at Balurghat High School has triggered political and public concern in Dakshin Dinajpur district after a video surfaced online allegedly showing a teacher being humiliated by a student.

The episode, said to have occurred in late January in an 11th-grade classroom, has not been independently verified. The footage appears to show a teacher apologizing before the class and kneeling before a student. As he stands, the student is seen slapping him while classmates record the incident on mobile phones.

The school, one of the oldest institutions in Balurghat, began admitting girls in higher secondary classes about three years ago. The incident has raised broader questions about discipline and campus safety.

Headmaster Srijit Saha said an inquiry committee has been formed and CCTV footage is under review, adding that administrative and legal steps will follow based on the findings.

In connection with the incident, Dr. Ashok Lahiri, the BJP legislator from Balurghat, on Wednesday appealed to the State Education Minister for a proper and impartial investigation. Calling the reported slapping “deeply unfortunate,” he urged that, regardless of whether the teacher or the student is found responsible, a fair and fearless inquiry be conducted.
