An accusation that money intended for a rural housing beneficiary was transferred to another person’s bank account has set off a political confrontation in South Dinajpur district, with leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) blaming officials of a Gram Panchyat run by the Trinamool Congress.
The complaint centers on Patiram Gram Panchayat, where Uttam Sarkar, a resident of the Paharpur area, says he applied in October 2024 for assistance under the government’s rural housing scheme. According to Mr.Uttam Sarkar, his application — numbered WB 119874828 — was accepted.Yet the funds never reached him.Mr.Uttam Sarkar lives with his mother, wife and daughter in a small dwelling made of jute sticks, mud and tin fencing. A local booth-level functionary of the BJP, he and party leaders allege that his political identity led to him being denied the benefit. They contend that his documents were used to route the payment into someone else’s account.

Local BJP officials have accused survey workers and Trinamool leaders of acting in concert to exclude what they call a genuine beneficiary. They describe the move as a case of political vendetta designed to deprive an opposition worker of government assistance.“This is not an error but a planned deprivation,” a BJP leader in the area said, demanding an administrative inquiry.
Party representatives warned that if authorities failed to identify those responsible and take action, they would organize a larger protest.Trinamool representatives in the panchayat had not immediately responded to the allegations. The episode has stirred tension in the block, where disputes over the distribution of welfare benefits have frequently mirrored the state’s sharp political divides.
Maloy Kumar Mondal, president of the Trinamool Congress in Balurghat block, rejected allegations that rural housing money was diverted. He said beneficiaries are chosen on the basis of verified information and that the complainant’s name did not appear on the final priority list. Mondal added the confusion may stem from two individuals sharing the same name and urged the accuser to verify records at the block office.
Regarding this matter, BJP District President Swarup Chowdhury said, "The TMC's claims are completely false. The house of a worker was craftily snatched away simply because they support the BJP, and the funds were diverted to a TMC worker's account. Our worker was even threatened to join the TMC. We demand a thorough investigation into this incident and punishment for the culprits."
