From Floor to Table

On the full-moon observance of Shivaratri, a foundation stone was laid on Sunday for a new dining hall at the students’ hostel run by Bharat Sevashram Sangha in the Tior area of Hili block, a long-awaited upgrade for children who until now have eaten their meals seated on the floor.
The ceremony was attended by monks of the order and Ashok Lahiri, the legislator from Balurghat, who joined them in unveiling the plaque.
Dr. Lahiri said the dining facility would be built with assistance from a nationalized bank and expressed hope that construction would be completed swiftly. For years, he noted, resident students have had to sit on the ground to eat — a particular hardship during the winter months, when the cold made mealtimes uncomfortable for younger children.
Once finished, the hall is expected to provide a safer and more dignified space for daily meals, easing seasonal difficulties and improving living conditions at the hostel.
