Fulfilling Local Demands

In a move seen as both infrastructural and politically significant ahead of the Assembly elections, Dr.Sukanta Majumdar, Member of Parliament from Balurghat, on Tuesday inaugurated a new stoppage of the Balurghat–Siliguri Intercity Express at Rampur railway station.
The formal launch took place at a government function attended by the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Katihar Division and Tapan MLA Budhrai Tudu. Until now, the train halted directly at Gangarampur after departing from Balurghat. With the new arrangement, it will first stop at Rampur before proceeding to Gangarampur — a change local residents had long demanded.
The introduction of the new stoppage marks another step in what Mr. Majumdar has described as a broader push to strengthen railway connectivity across South Dinajpur district. Over the past few years, he has consistently emphasized rail infrastructure as a catalyst for regional growth, pressing railway authorities to improve services, expand connectivity, and ensure that smaller stations are not overlooked.
Local leaders said the Rampur halt is expected to significantly benefit residents by improving access to Siliguri, a major urban and commercial hub in North Bengal. Enhanced connectivity is likely to ease travel for patients seeking advanced medical treatment and students pursuing higher education, while also facilitating smoother movement for traders and daily commuters.
Dr.Sukanta Majumdar underscored that railway development in South constituency is intended to serve ordinary citizens and should remain free from the influence of local syndicates. He asserted that infrastructure growth must be transparent and people-centric, signaling a firm stance against any attempts to monopolize railway-related economic activity.
The Balurghat–Siliguri Intercity Express has become a vital link between South Dinajpur and Siliguri. By securing the new stoppage at Rampur, Dr. Majumdar has further reinforced his image as a parliamentarian focused on tangible infrastructure outcomes — positioning railway transformation as a cornerstone of his development agenda in the constituency.
As electoral momentum builds, the expansion of rail services stands out as a visible marker of change, blending governance with grassroots political messaging in the heart of rural Bengal.
