Nearly 80 families formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday at the BJP party office in the Gopalganj Nakkati area of the Kumarganj Assembly constituency, marking a notable political shift in South Dinajpur ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The families, many of whom said they had long been associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and later aligned themselves with the Trinamool Congress after the change in political power, claimed they found little organizational presence or grassroots engagement from the Trinamool Congress. Disillusioned, they said, they decided to switch allegiance to the BJP.

Political Crossover

“We were with the CPI(M) for years,” several new entrants said. “After the political transition, we moved towards the Trinamool Congress, but over time there was hardly any party presence in our area. That is why we have come under the BJP’s banner.”

The families were formally inducted into the party by BJP district president Swarup Chowdhury, who handed over party flags and welcomed them into the organization. The new members said they were determined to strengthen the BJP ahead of the polls scheduled for the 26th and expressed confidence that the party would emerge stronger in the constituency.Addressing the gathering, Mr. Swarup Chowdhury said the growing support reflected a desire for change among voters. “People are joining the BJP because they want development, accountability and a strong alternative in the district,” he said.

Political analysts view the development as significant, coming as it does during Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee’s tour of South Dinajpur district. They say the timing of the mass joining points to an increasingly polarized political landscape, suggesting that the upcoming Assembly elections in the region are shaping up to be a largely two-cornered contest between the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
