On a sunlit Monday afternoon, as traffic surged across Gangarampur town under clearing skies, the local traffic police delivered an unmistakable message: battery-powered vehicles are not beyond the reach of the law.Dispelling a widespread misconception that electric vehicles require neither helmets nor documentation, the Gangarampur Traffic Police launched a public awareness drive at the town’s busiest crossing. Led by Traffic Officer-in-Charge Rajat Pradhan, along with police personnel and civic volunteers, the initiative marked a decisive shift in local road-safety enforcement.

Shortly after 2 p.m., officers took position at the central four-point junction, a familiar site for routine checks of motorcyclists. But instead of the usual targets, attention turned to battery-operated scooters and vehicles, catching many commuters off guard. Drivers were informed that electric vehicles capable of exceeding 25 kilometers per hour fall squarely under the ambit of motor vehicle regulations.Officials explained that such vehicles must carry valid driving licenses, registration documents, and require riders to wear helmets, in accordance with traffic laws. Vehicles operating below the speed threshold remain exempt, but only under clearly defined conditions. Mr. Pradhan personally briefed drivers on the legal framework governing electric mobility, emphasizing that technological change does not nullify civic responsibility. In a symbolic gesture aimed at reinforcing road discipline, traffic officers distributed oranges to electric vehicle drivers, urging them to “choose safety over shortcuts.”

The police made it clear that the current phase of the campaign is educational rather than punitive, but warned that strict enforcement and fines would follow for violations in the future. The initiative has drawn a largely positive response from residents, many of whom welcomed the clarity amid the rapid rise of electric vehicles on town roads. As Gangarampur adapts to a changing transportation landscape, the message from its traffic authorities was firm and timely: electric does not mean exempt.
