In a stirring display of grit, discipline and youthful ambition, students from Dakshin Dinajpur have carved out a landmark chapter in West Bengal’s school sports history at the 41st State Sports Competition, organized by the West Bengal Board of Primary Education. The two-day championship, held on January 9 and 10 at the Post Graduate Government Institute for Physical Education in Banipur, Habra, brought together top young athletes from districts across the state. While North 24 Parganas topped the overall standings with 64 points, it was Dakshin Dinajpur that emerged as one of the meet’s most compelling stories, finishing eighth — the district’s best performance since the competition’s inception.
Athletes from Dakshin Dinajpur secured first place in four separate events, a breakthrough achievement widely hailed by education officials as a turning point for grassroots sports development in the district. At the forefront was Sumana Singh, a student of Belbari Junior Basic School under Gangarampur West Circle, who delivered a commanding performance by winning gold in both the 100-meter and 200-meter races in Group- B. Her rare double victory made her one of the standout performers of the entire meet.
Further strengthening the district’s medal tally were two more champions in Group A events. Abdur Rajjak, a student of Chaksukdebpur Primary School under Tapan West Circle, clinched first place in the Shuttle Race, while Kumar Pahan of Mohishnita Primary School in the Hili Circle claimed the top honor in the Long Jump.
The achievements triggered celebrations across Dakshin Dinajpur. The Chairman of the District Primary School Council (DPSC),Dakshin Dinajpur, Santosh Hansda, joined teachers and education officials in applauding the young athletes, calling their success “a testament to perseverance, disciplined training and the untapped potential of rural students.”
To honor the historic feat, the DPSC, Dakshin Dinajpur, felicitated the medal winners on Wednesday from the main stage of the 30th District Book Fair in Gangarampur. The ceremony saw the students receive floral garlands and books, along with cash awards. Sumana Singh, having secured two first-place finishes, was awarded ₹10,000, while Abdur Rajjak and Kumar Pahan received ₹5,000 each for their respective victories.
As applause rang out across the fairgrounds, the occasion stood as more than a celebration of medals. It marked the rise of a district long considered an underdog — now asserting itself on West Bengal’s sporting map, carried forward by the confidence, commitment and dreams of its youngest champions.
Mithun Chakraborty, the Cashier of the District Primary School Council (DPSC), credited the achievement to teamwork, stating, "This success is the result of everyone’s collective efforts. We will soon felicitate all the participants who represented us at the state level."
