The streets of Balurghat came alive on Monday morning as the Ramakrishna Mission here observed the 164th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, the monk whose ideas continue to shape India’s spiritual and social imagination. As in previous years, the celebration began at dawn with a colorful procession led by monks of the Ramakrishna Mission, devotees, disciples and admirers. At the heart of the march was a portrait of Swami Vivekananda, carried reverently as the procession wound its way through the town before returning to the Mission premises.
Students from several local schools took part in the event, joined by teachers and NCC cadets, lending the procession both youthful energy and disciplined order. The sight of schoolchildren walking alongside saffron-robed monks underscored the enduring appeal of Vivekananda’s message to successive generations. The procession was formally inaugurated from the Ramakrishna Mission and traversed major streets of Balurghat, drawing onlookers who paused to watch, some folding their hands in quiet respect. Swami Satyadharmananda Ji Maharaj, the head of the Balurghat Ramakrishna Mission, was present throughout the event.
Across the town, various organizations and institutions also marked the occasion with their own programs. Seminars, cultural events and prayer meetings were organized to reflect on Swami Vivekananda’s teachings—his call for strength, service and harmony—and to pay tribute to his legacy.
Observed nationally as National Youth Day, Vivekananda’s birth anniversary in Balurghat once again became not just a ceremonial event, but a reminder of ideals that continue to resonate in contemporary India.
