A Step Towards Dignity: Special Post Office Counters End ‘Staircase Ordeal’ for Seniors

In a quiet but consequential gesture toward civic dignity, India Post on Thursday inaugurated two dedicated service counters for elderly citizens and persons with disabilities at the Balurghat Head Post Office, a move officials described as the first of its kind in North Bengal.
The counters, located on the ground floor of the three-storied post office building, were formally opened by the Union Minister of State, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, who cut the ceremonial ribbon amid postal officials and local residents. The initiative seeks to address a long-standing and often overlooked hardship: the physical barriers faced by senior citizens and people with special needs in accessing basic public services.
For years, customers in these groups were compelled to navigate steep staircases to reach service counters on upper floors—an ordeal that many described as exhausting, humiliating, and at times impossible. Advocacy for a separate, accessible arrangement had been growing steadily, voiced through petitions, local representations, and everyday frustration.
“This is not merely an administrative adjustment,” said a senior citizen at the event. “It is an acknowledgment that access is a right, not a privilege.”
The response from the community was immediate and emotional. Elderly customers and persons with disabilities expressed relief and gratitude, calling the counters a recognition of their daily struggles and a restoration of dignity in routine transactions such as pension withdrawals, savings deposits, and postal documentation.
India Post officials said the Balurghat model could serve as a blueprint for similar facilities across the region, particularly in older government buildings where accessibility remains a challenge. While modest in scale, the initiative underscores a broader shift in public service delivery—one that places empathy alongside efficiency.
In a region where infrastructure often lags behind intent, the opening of these counters stands as a reminder that small structural changes can carry profound human weight.
