As West Bengal approaches the first phase of its assembly elections, political tensions are rising sharply, with the Bharatiya Janata Party intensifying its campaign in the district of Dakshin Dinajpur. The party has focused particular attention on the district’s six constituencies, signaling their strategic importance.

Following a recent rally by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Kushmandi, India’s Home Minister Amit Shah addressed a large gathering on Tuesday in Gachiar, under the Gangarampur assembly constituency. His speech combined promises of economic development with sharp criticism of the state’s ruling party.

Mr.Amit Shah pledged a series of infrastructure and institutional projects aimed at boosting North Bengal, including the construction of a major highway linking Darjeeling to the Sundarbans, a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), a cancer hospital, and premier educational institutions such as an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and an Indian Institute of Management (IIM). He also promised to develop Darjeeling into an eco-adventure tourism hub and reiterated a commitment to resolve the long-standing Gorkha issue through constitutional means, without dividing the state. In a pointed attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Mr.Amit Shah accused party workers of intimidating voters during elections. He urged citizens to resist fear and participate freely in the democratic process, expressing confidence that the Election Commission would ensure peaceful polling. He further alleged that the state government was misleading the public and asserted that, if elected, the BJP would appoint a chief minister from within Bengal who is rooted in the state’s language and culture.

National security and border issues featured prominently in his address. Mr.Amit Shah vowed to curb illegal infiltration, cross-border smuggling, and related criminal activities, while also promising to restore the Punarbhaba River and protect agricultural land from flooding.Targeting key voter groups, he outlined welfare measures for women, including direct monthly financial assistance, maternity benefits, and free travel on government buses. He also highlighted employment opportunities for youth and development initiatives for farmers.

The Home Minister invoked broader national themes, referencing the revocation of Article 370 in Kashmir and past military operations, while also criticizing opposition parties over the long-delayed construction of the Ram temple.Elsewhere in the district, the BJP’s state president Samik Bhattacharya held a rally in Kumarganj . Defense Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to lead a roadshow there on Wednesday. With voting day drawing closer, the BJP’s intensified outreach in Dakshin Dinajpur underscores the high stakes of the contest, as both state and national leaders converge to shape the electoral narrative.
