A night of devotional celebration in a village in West Bengal’s Dakshin Dinajpur district descended into fear and mourning on Sunday after a 30-year-old man was found fatally wounded with his throat slit, in what police are investigating as a possible murder.
The incident occurred around 9 p.m. in Uttar Kumarganj, under Safanagar Panchayat in Kumarganj block, where residents had gathered for a Haribasor, a traditional religious observance marked by devotional singing and community participation. According to local accounts, the village had been immersed in festivity when the incident abruptly shattered the atmosphere.
As attendees began returning home, several villagers came upon a young man lying on the road, grievously injured and struggling to survive. He was quickly transported to the Kumarganj Rural Hospital, where attending physicians declared him dead on arrival.The deceased, identified as Sujit Das, was reportedly attacked inside his own home. Preliminary accounts suggest that his hands had been tied before his throat was cut with a sharp weapon. Despite his critical injuries, Sujit Das is believed to have run nearly 50 meters in a desperate attempt to seek help before collapsing on the road. Witnesses said he was unable to call out due to the severity of his wound.
News of the killing spread rapidly, casting a pall over the village. Officers from Kumarganj Police Station arrived at the scene and have since begun an investigation. Police have detained the victim’s wife, Krishna Das, for questioning, though no formal charges had been announced at the time of reporting.
Family members described a scene of confusion and grief. The victim’s father, Ajit Das, who was at home during the incident, told that he was unaware of what had transpired, citing hearing impairment. His mother, Lakshmi Das, rushed back from the religious gathering upon hearing of the attack, only to find her son in a critical condition.
While some villagers have speculated that the murder may have been linked to domestic discord or an alleged extramarital relationship, investigators have urged restraint, noting that the motive remains unclear and under active examination.Residents of the area have called for a swift and thorough investigation, demanding that those responsible be brought to justice. As the inquiry unfolds, a community once gathered in prayer now finds itself waiting anxiously for answers.
