A rapid, coordinated response by the police in West Bengal’s South Dinajpur district led to the rescue of an abducted hospital employee within two hours of his kidnapping on Thursday, officials said, in an operation that authorities described as a significant success.
The man, Dhruva Ranjan Chowdhury, a facility supervisor with the security agency at Balurghat Super Specialty Hospital, was allegedly taken from the hospital premises in broad daylight, according to the police and his colleagues.
Soon after learning of the abduction, associates of Mr. Chowdhury filed a complaint at Balurghat police station. Officers alerted units across the district, issued a high alert and began scanning surveillance footage to trace the vehicle used in the crime.
The trail led investigators to the jurisdiction of Tapan police station, where officers intercepted the vehicle, rescued Mr. Chowdhury and detained the suspected kidnapper. The accused, identified as Mokles Miah, is also from Kumarganj block, the same administrative area as the victim, the police said.
Bikram Prasad, the district’s deputy superintendent of police for headquarters, said the response began immediately after the complaint was received.“As soon as information reached us, we activated teams and alerted all police stations,” Mr.Bikram Prasad said. “After examining CCTV footage, we were able to locate the victim in the Tapan area. He has been rescued, and the main accused has been arrested.”Investigators are questioning the suspect to determine the motive, he added.
News of the kidnapping spread quickly among the victim’s family. His mother, Suchita Chowdhury, said she rushed to the police station after being informed.“I cannot say why my son was abducted,” she said. “I was preparing the house because he was to observe a fast tomorrow. Then I received the news and came here.”By evening, officers said, the victim was safe and further legal proceedings were underway, bringing relief to a community shaken by the daytime seizure but reassured by the speed of the rescue.
