Teenager’s Death by Suicide After Father’s Reprimand Shocks in Balurghat

A pall of grief settled over a neighborhood in Balurghat after a 17-year-old boy died by suicide on Sunday evening, an incident that residents say has left the community shaken and searching for answers.

The teenager, identified as Jeet Barman, had taken his father’s electric rickshaw out earlier in the day, according to family members. When he returned home, his father scolded him for using the vehicle without permission.Relatives said that, apparently upset by the reprimand, the boy later went to the backyard of the family home, where he was found hanging from a mango tree.

Officers from the Balurghat police station responded to the scene after being notified and recovered the body. A post-mortem examination was conducted at the Balurghat police morgue at about 2 p.m. on Monday, officials said.

Police have begun an investigation to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the death. News of the incident spread quickly, drawing neighbors to the area and deepening a sense of mourning in the locality.
