In a significant boost to the fight against cybercrime, the South Dinajpur district police have recovered more than ₹10.5 million (₹1 crore 5 lakh) and returned it to victims who were defrauded online, officials said on Wednesday.
Office of the Superintendent of Police

District Superintendent of Police Chinmoy Mittal (IPS)said that during 2025, the Balurghat Cyber Police Station registered 55 cybercrime cases, of which 42 have already been solved. As part of the investigations, 32 accused have been arrested and 106 raids conducted across the district and beyond, including operations in other parts of the state and across India.

“Cybercrime investigations today require speed, coordination and technology,” Mr. Mittal said. “That is where we have focused our efforts.”

According to police records, more than ₹30 million linked to financial fraud cases was frozen by investigators. From this amount, ₹10.5 million has so far been successfully recovered and returned to individuals who had fallen prey to various online scams.

The district cybercrime branch also seized 40 smartphones, one laptop, around 80 ATM cards and several bank passbooks believed to have been used in fraudulent operations.

One major breakthrough came in connection with a 2024 case (Case No. 15), in which a victim was allegedly duped of ₹2.5 million through a fake trading application that promised unusually high returns. Police managed to recover ₹2.2 million from that case and return it to the complainant, officials said.

Victims and their families expressed relief at the recovery. “I never thought I would see that money again,” said Dilip Sarkar, a cybercrime victim. Mahabur Rahman Sarkar, a relative of another victim, credited the police for “persistent follow-up and clear communication.”

Mr. Mittal noted that in response to the rising number of cybercrime incidents, the police administration has increased manpower at the cyber police station and upgraded its technological capabilities to better track digital fraud networks.

Cybercrime has been steadily increasing across South Dinajpur district. Official data show that all 55 cases registered in 2025 were financial or online fraud-related, underscoring the growing challenge faced by law enforcement — and the expanding role of specialized cyber units in confronting it.
