A wave of concern spread through Balurghat town on Tuesday after a skeleton was spotted floating in the Atrai canal near the Andolan Bridge, prompting a police investigation into its origin and authenticity.

The discovery was made during the morning hours when local traders and residents had gathered near the municipal parking area, where a wholesale market operates daily. Several people noticed an object resembling a human skeleton drifting beneath the bridge in the canal and alerted others, drawing a crowd to the site.

Balurghat police were informed shortly thereafter and arrived at the scene to begin an inquiry. Officers are currently examining whether the skeleton is human and, if so, where it may have come from. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the skeleton could be artificial.

Bijoy Rabidas, a shopkeeper whose store is located near the bridge, said he saw the skeleton floating into view from the direction of the canal. “It was drifting in the water, but I cannot say whether it was real or made of plastic,” he said. “Only the police investigation will clarify that.”

Another eyewitness, Debananda Pal, noted that the skeleton appeared to have no flesh or tissue attached to it. “Because there was no sign of muscle or skin, it is difficult to say whether it was a real human skeleton or something made of thermocol,” he said.

Forensic examination would be necessary to determine the nature of the remains. Until then, the incident continues to fuel speculation and unease among local residents.
