Protesting the deplorable state of the education system in the tribal-dominated areas of South Dinajpur district, the Adivasi Sengle Abhijan staged an indefinite sit-in demonstration in front of the District Magistrate’s office. The protest began at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, and even as the day wore on, no one from the district administration came forward to hold discussions with the protesters, they alleged.

The protesters have placed three key demands: immediate appointment of headmasters in tribal secondary schools across the district; upgradation of tribal junior high schools to high schools; and recruitment of subject-specific teachers in every subject-based tribal school. According to the Adivasi Sengle Abhijan, these demands have been raised repeatedly over a long period, but the administration has failed to take any effective action.

At around 2:30 p.m., the organization’s district president, Parimal Mardi, voiced his anger from the protest stage.

He said, “We have been sitting here peacefully since 10 a.m., but despite so much time passing, neither the District Magistrate nor any representative of the administration has come to speak with us. We are deeply concerned about the future of Adivasi students. Upgrading Junior High School to a high school and appointing headmasters and subject teachers in every tribal school are now urgent necessities.”

The protesters issued a clear warning that the sit-in would continue indefinitely if their demands were not met. They claimed that frustration is mounting due to the administration’s silence. All eyes are now on when the district administration will come forward for talks to defuse the situation.
