Signaling an early push toward infrastructure-led development, the newly elected chairman of the Balurghat Municipality, Surojit Saha, on Wednesday handed over work orders for the repair and construction of 46 roads across the town, marking his first major administrative initiative since assuming office.
The projects will be carried out under Pathshree (also known as Rastashree), a flagship road development program envisioned by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The work orders were distributed at a formal ceremony held at the municipality’s Subarnatat auditorium.Municipal officials said the initiative will cover 46 key roads spread across 25 wards, executed through seven separate work orders. Many of these roads, long plagued by wear and neglect, are set to undergo extensive repairs and upgrades. The municipality aims to complete the work before the onset of the monsoon season.
Speaking at the event, Mr.Surojit Saha acknowledged that administrative and practical hurdles had delayed the launch of development projects but emphasized that the municipality was now moving ahead at full speed. “Today we have handed over the work orders for road development under the Pathshree project. Through seven work orders, 46 roads across 25 wards will be repaired,” he said. “Our focus now is on swift execution without further delay.”
Municipal authorities believe the road upgrades will significantly improve connectivity within the town, easing daily travel for residents, students and traders alike, while also supporting local commerce.
Residents see the Pathshree rollout as a defining first step for the new chairman’s tenure. According to municipal sources, the road works are part of a broader development roadmap that will soon extend to drainage, drinking water supply and street lighting — signaling a renewed emphasis on civic infrastructure in Balurghat.
