ASHA workers across South Dinajpur intensified their agitation on Friday, demanding regular monthly salaries instead of honorariums, along with government job recognition and access to all state benefits. The protest comes as part of an ongoing work stoppage that has been underway across the district since December 23.

Agitation

On the day, ASHA workers from various blocks gathered at the district headquarters in Balurghat and took out a massive protest rally. Demonstrators burned copies of a government directive in front of Balurghat Police Station as a mark of protest against what they termed as anti-worker policies.Later, under the banner of the Paschim Banga ASHA Workers’ Union, the protesters staged a demonstration and submitted a deputation at the office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH), South Dinajpur, reiterating their long-pending demands.

Speaking during the protest, district union president Namita Mahanta said that ASHA workers would continue their movement until their demands for dignified wages, job security, and official recognition as government employees are met.The agitation has affected routine grassroots healthcare services in several parts of the district, with workers asserting that their struggle is for both their rights and the strengthening of public health delivery.
